Effects of Having a Sedentary Lifestyle

By: JohnBarnes

Basically, the term sedentary lifestyle indicates that physical activity is either irregular or at very low levels in an individual’s life. When an individual has such a lifestyle, he or she is clearly not indulging in much of an exercise and/or avoids any situation where some physical activity would be required.

In today’s world, most people have a sedentary lifestyle as they usually spend their time either on the couch watching television, or working on their computers. Life has become so convenient that it does not allow individuals to get off their backs and move around much.

Most of the time, people do not seem to realize the importance of including exercise in their lifestyles. Giving up these activities completely is not the solution, as one will always have to work on the computer, read books and spends some time watching television.

However, it is important to understand that there should be a healthy balance between these activities so that one’s body muscles get effectively utilized. If one keeps sitting in the same position all day long, he or she will have poor blood circulation, which further increases the likelihood of acquiring a number of diseases.

Sedentary lifestyles have a number of effects on the individual’s health, which makes awareness and change in the lifestyle highly important. The main reason why people tend to stay away from an active lifestyle is laziness; it is always easier and more fun to lie around or simply doze off. However, it affects one’s health in the following ways:

First of all, the person has immense chances of becoming obese if he or she has unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. According to medical experts, one’s genes can play an important role in promoting obesity too, however an unhealthy lifestyle always contributes the most.

The risk of heart diseases increases to a great extent too. The heart can only function properly if it is receiving enough supply of blood at all times. However in this case, the blood supply would be slow and minimal, which would cause the blood vessels to become stiff. This is one main reason why a person may acquire coronary heart disease, as unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise and physical activity may result in the blockage of blood vessels.

Other diseases that may take place include diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis. Including exercise in one’s lifestyle is a much easier and sensible step than to experience these diseases.
